Prior to the conference, the BSP will be running a day of added-value workshops and symposia on Thursday 27 November, with sessions on a range of topics from top tips to treating perio in practice, to the latest surgical techniques and the perio ortho interface. There will also be a joint meeting with the British Society for Oral and Dental Research exploring British perio research and how that is translating into practice, together with an afternoon of fantastic BSP lectures. Add tickets to the workshops to your conference booking and make the most of your time in Edinburgh. Download the full Thursday programme here and read on below to find out more about each session.
BSODR/BSP Joint Meeting: Bridging research and practice - innovations in periodontology
Join us for a groundbreaking joint session between the BSP and the British Society for Oral and Dental Research (BSODR) Periodontal Research Group (PRG). This session is designed to captivate and inspire, showcasing cutting-edge research, the latest evidence-based treatment modalities and novel developments that are shaping the future of periodontal care.
We’re thrilled to welcome a stellar line-up of speakers including Professor Nick Jakubovics, (Editor of the Journal of Dental Research) shedding light on oral bacteria, biofilms, and their relationship with periodontitis and its management; Dr Jeanie Suvan, who will delve into the evolution of practices in non-surgical periodontal therapy; Professor Owen Addison discussing how material choices affect implant outcomes and Professor Robert Hill, presenting a “warts and all” exploration of toothpastes and their impact on periodontal disease. Each talk will highlight the latest scientific insights and provide practical applications for your clinical practice.
Tailored for a mixed audience of dental academics, researchers, dentists, dental hygienists, and dental therapists, this session offers an exciting exploration of how research can directly enhance clinical practice. Whether you’re keen to stay ahead in your field, improve patient outcomes, or simply discover how innovation can transform your day-to-day practice, this session promises a unique opportunity to connect with leading experts and gain actionable insights. Don’t miss the chance to bridge the gap between research and patient care!
STRAUMANN WORKSHOP: Peri implantitis - a future time bomb!!!
Facilitator: Dr Amit Patel, Specialist in Periodontics &
Implant Dentist, and Associate Professor, University of Birmingham School of
Dentistry, UK
Dental implant therapy is growing in popularity amongst our patients both here in the UK and around the world. This course will help clinicians reduce the risk of peri-implantitis utilising the newly published S3 guidelines to monitoring dental implants, early disease detection and intervention. We will also look at the current thinking around non-surgical treatment approaches of peri-implant diseases.
EMS WORKSHOP: Perfecting the Piezon technique
Facilitator: Faye Donald, Dental Hygienist, UK
With the correct technique, PIEZON® technology can achieve effective and comfortable calculus removal, avoiding over instrumentation and optimising treatment outcomes. During this workshop, Fay will be discussing the rationale behind PIEZON® and will help participants differentiate between correct and incorrect technique by demonstrating the importance of tip selection, angulation, adaptation and lateral pressure.
BSP meeting
Join the BSP for an afternoon of practical lectures with take home tips for all dental care professionals. This will include advice on managing the non-responding patient and a discussion on the interaction between orthodontics and periodontology exploring how to achieve the best outcome for patients. You will also have the opportunity to listen to presentations from The Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize shortlisted finalists.
LISTERINE® SYMPOSIUM: Why mouthwash?
Exploring the ever-pressing need for early intervention, a panel discussion to unwrap the evidence for mouthwash as an adjuvant to mechanical cleaning and how to apply to patient plaque management strategies whilst realising the principles of the S3 level guidance. Join us for this dynamic and interactive session.
HU-FRIEDY WORKSHOP: In for the long haul - essential techniques to enhance nonsurgical care of dental implants
Dr Jeanie Suvan, Clinical Lecturer, Oral Sciences, University of Glasgow, UK
GEISTLICH WORKSHOP: Guided bone regeneration 2.0 to master advanced clinical indications
Professor Frank Schwarz, Chairman, Dept of Oral Surgery & Implantology, Centre for Dentistry & Oral Medicine, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt, Germany
Clinicians should be aware that lateral and vertical ridge augmentation procedures were shown to be effective, however, they are highly demanding therapies, requiring surgical training, experience, and skills. Many fine-tuning efforts have been made for various surgical procedures to facilitate and broaden their clinical applications. Latest innovations are focusing on the advancement of Guided Bone Regeneration to master advanced clinical indications.
The following aspects will be thoroughly discussed at the workshop: Advanced GBR protocols for staged lateral- and vertical grafting. | Advanced GBR protocols for peri-implantitis related defects. | Indication based Flap designs (Combination flap, Double flap). | Suturing techniques.
NSK WORKSHOP: Resective and pre-prosthetic surgery
Professor Moritz Kebschull, Head, Division of Periodontology & Oral Rehabilitation, University of Birmingham, UK
GEISTLICH WORKSHOP: Strip Mucograft and the garage technique
Professor István Urban, Professor, University of Szeged, Hungary; and University of Michigan, USA
For extreme vertical deficiency in an attempt to achieve wound closure and hence graft stability, the buccal mucosa is often broadly released, and this often results in a severe apical translocation of the mucogingival line, loss of vestibule and keratinized mucosa (KM).
The need to graft these large mucosal areas necessitates the harvest of an autograft with enough size and dimension to achieve the desired outcome, and this may lead to significant patient morbidity. Therefore, there was a need for the development of less invasive surgical procedures. Recently, a combination of a strip gingival graft in combination with a collagen matrix was introduced to reconstruct the lost vestibule and keratinized tissue. Further research demonstrated that this regenerated tissue is keratinized. However, any open healing graft that is harvested from the palate will have different colour and texture than the neighbouring tissue. Therefore, there was a need to further develop a more aesthetic grafting technique. A recent clinical study demonstrated that strip gingival graft harvested from the neighbouring labial gingiva will result in significantly better tissue colour.
In addition to the lack of peri and inter implant papillae can be a significant aesthetic and functional problem to the patient. This presentation will demonstrate two novel surgical techniques the Iceberg and the Garage connective tissue grafts to reconstruct the lost papillae.
14:15-17:15, £49. PLEASE NOTE: This will workshop will take place on Saturday 29 November.
