Professor Owen Addison (Thursday BSODR/BSP meeting)

Professor of Oral Rehabilitation, King's College London, UK

Professor Owen Addison is Professor of Oral Rehabilitation at KCL and an Honorary NHS Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. He qualified as a dentist from the University of Birmingham in 2001, gained his PhD in Biomaterials in 2007 from the same institution, and completed 5-year specialist clinical training in 2012. Appointed as a Lecturer at the University of Birmingham in 2007, he became Senior Lecturer and honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry 2012, and in 2015 was promoted to Chair in Applied Biomaterials. In 2016 he took up the position as the ADA&C Endowed Chair in Oral Health Translational Research at the University of Alberta in Canada where he spent 3 years, before returning to the UK to join KCL.His research is highly interdisciplinary, sitting at the interface between Life, Physical and Clinical Sciences and extending from foundational studies to early clinical translation. Cross cutting research themes within the group include: the application of multimodal imaging approaches, including synchrotron-based techniques, to study synthetic and natural biomaterials; and studies to predict and enhance the clinical performance of implant biomaterials and devices. The group has received funding from, EPSRC, NIHR, European Commission, Wellcome, NSERC (Canada), MRC, industry and charitable funders and his work has been nationally and internationally recognised. In 2010 he was recipient of a National Institute for Health Research Clinician Scientist Fellowship –rarely awarded to dentally trained clinicians. In 2013 he received the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Innovation in Implant Sciences Award and in 2016 he was awarded the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award -Young Investigator. As Head of Centre of Oral Clinical and Translational Sciences at KCL he leads a research vision focused on the development of materials, devices, diagnostic technologies and surgical innovation to enhance oral and dental health. 

Professor Raimondo Ascione

Professor of Cardiac Surgery and Translational Research and Director of TBRC, University of Bristol, UK

Professor Raimondo Ascione completed nedical school and specialist training in cardiac surgery at the University Hospital Federico II, in Naples. He moved to the UK in 2000 and stayed, having been appointed Consultant Senior Lecturer in Cardiac Surgery in 2002, and then promoted to Reader in 2006, and to Professor in 2009. He completed a Master of Surgery at the University of Bristol in 2002 and was accepted as Fellow ad eundeum by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2004. Currently, he is one of the UK's most senior and active professors of cardiac surgery (at the University of Bristol) and Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the University Hospital Bristol Weston NHS Foundation Trust. He is also the Director of the Translational Biomedical Research Centre – TBRC at the University of Bristol, an inventor and entrepreneur. 

He has led  >15 first-in-human trials in the NHS on the validation of the novel surgical technique of Beating Heart Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting technique, for which he is known internationally and as a top expert (>1500 cases carried out with outstanding outcome). His clinical research interest has also covered myocardial, pulmonary or renal protection via randomized trials as well as reducing postoperative complications in diabetic patients or those suffering with preoperative renal impairment or recent myocardial infaction or with poor oral/dental health. In 2014 he shifted his research focus on advanced preclinical development/validation at regulatory standards of new drugs and medical devices in the areas of cardiac surgery, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular tissue engineering and regeneration, biomaterials, stem-cell and gene therapies. To this end, he founded the TBRC facility in  Bristol (securing £6.5M in capital bids) as the only UK-based research facility for large animal certified as MHRA compliant for testing of new drugs and medical devices. In this new vein, he is co-inventor of a new polymeric heart valve, aimed at replacing existing biological and mechanical valves, and  CMO of CamBris Cardiac, a spin-out of Universities of Bristol and Cambridge since 2022, with >£2.5M funding from BHF, NIHRi4i and Innovate UK ICURe. As PI or co-PI he has secured >£60M in research grants and capital bids awards, >230 publications in peer reviewed journals, >50 on social media, H-Index 51; >10150 citations.

Professor Iain Chapple

Professor of Periodontology, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, the University of Birmingham UK and Birmingham NIHR Biomedical Research Centre in Inflammation, UK

Professor Iain Chapple is former Director of Research for the Institute of Clinical Sciences (2016-2022), and former Head/Dean of the Dental School (2016-2020) at Birmingham University. He has written 13 textbooks and 35 chapters. Iain was IADR Periodontal Research Group President (2006-7), European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) Treasurer (2007-2013); Workshop co-Chair (2008-current); Scientific Advisory Committee Chair (2013-2016); Secretary General (2016-2019) and BSP President (2014-2015). He was awarded: The Royal College of Surgeons Tomes medal (2011); IADR Distinguished Scientist (2018); EFP’s Eminence Award (2022) and was awarded an MBE in the 2022 Queens New Year’s Honour’s. He has published >250 papers and leads a regional periodontal service with a referral base of 6 million and a national service for adults with Epidermolysis Bullosa. Iain lectures all over the world on a broad range of topics related to periodontal diseases but has a strong interest in mechanisms underpinning periodontal-systemic disease links and in immune-microbial interactions.

Professor Janet Clarkson

Professor of Clinical Effectiveness, University of Dundee, UK

Professor Janet Clarkson is a director of the Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme (SDCEP) and Professor of Clinical Effectiveness at the University of Dundee. Her remit is to conduct high-quality research and promote the implementation of evidence in dental primary care. She has attracted more than £15m to lead UK-wide trials to evaluate aspects of routine dental care involving over 200 dental practices and 5,000 of their patients. Jan is a founding member of the Cochrane Oral Health Group and is Joint Co-ordinating Editor. In recognition of these achievements in 2023 she was elected a fellow of both the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Academy of Medical Sciences, the first dentist to have been awarded both.

Professor Shauna Culshaw

Professor of Periodontology and Immunology, University of Glasgow

Professor Shauna Culshaw is Professor of Periodontology and Immunology at the University of Glasgow, where she is Dental Clinical Research Facility Lead and Lead for Undergraduate teaching in Periodontics. Shauna completed specialist training in Periodontics and treats patients referred to Glasgow Dental Hospital with advanced periodontal diseases, and provides specialist training to staff. Shauna and her research team investigate the immune response in the oral cavity and the relationship between periodontitis and systemic inflammatory diseases.

Professor Mike Curtis

Professor of Microbiology, King’s College London, UK

Professor Mike Curtis is Professor of Microbiology at King’s College London in the Centre for Host Microbiome Interactions. His research is focussed on the role of the oral microbiome in the maintenance of health and the development of oral and systemic disease. He has a particular interest in the biology of the periodontal bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis and the application of animal models to examine the interplay between periodontal pathogens and the host response. He has served as Dean of the Institute of Dentistry, QMUL and Exec Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral and Craniofacial Sciences at King’s. He was awarded honorary FDS of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2008, Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2009, Distinguished Scientist in Basic Periodontal Disease Research of the IADR in 2005 and Distinguished Scientist of the European Federation of Periodontology in 2017.

Faye Donald (Thursday BSP workshop)

Dental Hygienist, UK

Faye Donald is a multi-award winning and highly experienced Dental Hygienist with a special interest in patient centred dentistry and minimally invasive approaches. Faye holds the National Diploma in Dental Hygiene as well as the National Certificate in Counselling Skills & Behavioural Therapy and has practiced in both general and specialist referral practice in the North of England for over 20 years. She is a mentor, certified Swiss Dental Academy Trainer for EMS, Guided Biofilm Therapy® ambassador, former chairperson for the North East region of BSDHT, key opinion leader for Oral-B and co-founder of the nationwide study club ‘The Contemporary Hygienist’. She speaks both nationally & internationally on the role of the Dental Hygienist in modern, contemporary practice. She is also known for her involvement in various projects aiming to shine a light on metal health within our industry. 


Dr Ian Dunn (Thursday BSP meeting)

Specialist Periodontist, UK

Dr Ian Dunn qualified from Leeds in 1998 and went into general practice in the North West. In 2001 he was awarded Membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practice. In 2002 he joined the teaching staff at Liverpool Dental Hospital in the Periodontology Department where he became the Undergraduate Teaching Lead in Periodontics and a Senior Clinical Teacher in Periodontics, a role he held for 5 years until leaving that position in 2018. In 2010 he completed his MSc in Periodontology and in 2013 he was admitted to the GDC Specialist List in Periodontics. In 2023 Ian was invited to become a Fellow of the College or General Dentistry.

Ian spends three days a week in private practice in the North West of England where he takes referrals for all aspects of Periodontology. He is the British Society of Periodontology & Implant Dentistry regional representative for Merseyside and Cheshire, and serves on their Council as Honorary Treasurer. In 2014 he was also elected to the BSP Faculty. He was the Deputy of the European Federation of Periodontology Communications Committee and is currently on the editorial board of Dental Update.

Ian teaches for the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons and runs their short course in Periodontics. He has recently been appointed Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Periodontics at UCLAN where he helps teaching on the postgraduate programme.

Professor Robert Hill (Thursday BSODR/BSP meeting)

Chair of Dental Physical Sciences, Dental Institute, Queen Mary University of London, UK

Professor Robert Hill is Chair of Dental Physical Sciences at the Dental Institute, Queen Mary University of London. He is one of the two founders of BioMin Technologies Ltd. BioMin produce BioMinF toothpaste based on fluoride containing bioactive glasses. Robert Hill is a Materials Engineer and was formerly Professor of Biomaterials at Imperial College. Robert Hill has published over 300  papers and 23 patents. He is the winner of numerous awards including the Varshneya Prize of the American Ceramic Society, the Armourers and Brasiers Venture Prize, the Chapman Medal and the Alan Wilson Memorial Prize. He works closely with Professor David Gillam a clinical periodontologist and expert on Dentine Hypersensitivity.

Professor Tariq Iqbal

Clinical Professor in Gut Microbiome, University of Birmingham, UK

Professor Tariq Iqbal is a gastroenterologist with a largely IBD practice. His research interests include the role of iron in inflammation and study of the gut microbiome. He set up the first UK public sector facility with a GMP licence to manufacture FMT for treatment of Clostridiodes infection and for use in clinical trials in 2017 and is FMT lead for the UK Microbiome for Health Expert Panel. He co-leads (with Professor Chapple) the oral-intestinal theme recently funded as part of the Birmingham NIHR BRC award 2022-2027.

Professor Nicholas Jakubovics (Thursday BSODR/BSP meeting)

Professor of Oral Microbiology at Newcastle University, UK

Professor Nick Jakubovics is Professor of Oral Microbiology at Newcastle University, UK, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Research. At Newcastle University, he leads the Translational Oral Biosciences research strand. His research program focuses on developing new approaches to control oral biofilms and biofilm-related infections elsewhere in the body. Nick has published more than 100 papers and has received several awards for his translational research, including the IADR Innovation in Oral Care Award in 2016. Throughout his career, Nick has been actively involved with professional societies and publishing. He was an Executive Board member of Applied Microbiology International from 2011-15 and a Features Editor of their quarterly magazine, The Microbiologist, for several years. He was Associate Editor at Oral Diseases (2016-17) and the Journal of Dental Research (2017-20) before being appointed Editor-in-Chief of the JDR in 2020. As part of this role, he is member of the Boards of Directors of the International and American Associations for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research.

Professor Moritz Kebschull

Specialist Periodontist, University of Birmingham, UK

Professor Moritz Kebschull is a specialist periodontist, Chair of Restorative Dentistry at Birmingham and the current president of the European Federation for Periodontology.

Professor Philip Marsh

Professor Emeritus (Oral Microbiology) at the School of Dentistry, University of Leeds, UK

Professor Philip Marsh has published over 250 research papers and review articles, and is co-author of a leading text book on oral microbiology, which is now in its sixth edition, with a new edition in preparation. He was the recipient of the ORCA-Rolex Award for Caries Research in 1991, the IADR Distinguished Science Award (Research in Dental Caries) in 1998, the Society for General Microbiology (UK) Colworth Prize Lecture Award for applied microbiology research in 2001, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry in 2008. His research interests include dental biofilms and oral microbial ecology, especially the influence of environmental factors on the composition and activity of the oral microbiome. This interaction is fundamental to understand whether the relationship between the oral microbiome and the host will result in health (symbiosis) or disease (dysbiosis); these concepts were encapsulated in the ‘ecological plaque hypothesis’ which he proposed in the 1990s. He is interested in treatment approaches that can prevent disease while preserving the important beneficial functions of the resident oral microbiome.

Dr Claire McCarthy

Clinical Research Fellow and Clinical Teacher Periodontology, King’s College London, UK

Dr Claire McCarthy graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2000.  She completed a master’s degree in teaching and learning in higher and professional education in 2007 and is a fellow of the higher education academy. She completed her PhD in 2024 at King’s College London where she is a clinical teacher and clinical research fellow in periodontology. Claire has taught all aspects of non-surgical periodontal and peri-implant therapy at undergraduate and postgraduate level for over 20 years.  She is contributing author of two textbooks, reviewer for two journals, co-Principal Investigator on several research projects focusing on dental device performance and aerosol mitigation, sits on curriculum accreditation committees, is a visiting scholar at NYU College of Dentistry and is an active member of her national professional organisations.

Professor Virginie Monnet-Corti (Thursday BSP meeting)

Professor and Head of the Department of Periodontology, Aix Marseille University, France

The clinical and research interests of Professor Virgine Monnet-Corti focus on the field of periodontology with a special emphasize on gum esthetics, periodontal plastic surgery and the relationship between periodontics and implantology, periodontics and orthodontics, and periodontal microbiota. She leads, with other experts, a group of clinical research called Parodontia. She lectures nationally and internationally and is the author of several publications, book chapters and the author of a book on periodontal plastic surgery (third edition in 2017). She is editor-in-chief of a French-language magazine called Parodontologie et Implantologie Orale. Un nouveau regard (Periodontology and Oral Implantology. A new look). 

She was the invited Editor-In-Chief of a special issue on Ortho-Perio Synergy for the SEPACLINICA journal in 2024.  She is the Past-President of the French Society of Periodontology and Oral Implantology (2013- 2018) and she was the Scientific Chair of the Perio Master Clinic of EFP “Perio-Ortho Synergy” Antwerp, 2023, and the Scientific Chair of the National congress of the French Society of Periodontology and Oral Implantology “No implantology without Periodontology”, France, 2023, and she was the Scientific Chair of the next International Perio Master Clinic of EFP “Perio-Ortho Synergy” Singapore, 2024.

Since 2023, she has been the deputy of the EFP project committee. She is the Scientific Chair of the next Europerio 12 in Munich in 2028.

Professor Tim Newton

Professor of Psychology as Applied to Dentistry, King's College London, UK

Professor Tim Newton is a Psychologist who has spent over 30 years working in dental settings with the goal of ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of good oral and dental health. He is particularly concerned with addressing the needs of people who are anxious about attending the dentist, and in encouraging dental healthcare professionals to work with patients to develop healthy behaviours. As part of this he has undertaken extensive work supporting the well being of the dental team. Tim is employed by King’s College London as Professor of Psychology as Applied to Dentistry, spending half his time working as Honorary Consultant Health Psychologist. Tim’s clinical work is focussed on individuals with dental phobia, and support for individual’s facing challenging dental procedures. Tim is a President and Trustee of the Oral Health Foundation, and a Trustee of the Borrow Foundation.

Dr Louise O’Dowd

Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, University of Edinburgh, UK

Dr Louise O’Dowd is a specialist in restorative dentistry and periodontology.  She works for the University of Edinburgh at Edinburgh Dental Institute (EDI) as a senior clinical lecturer and honorary consultant in restorative dentistry. She is Professional Lead for the Department of Restorative Dentistry; Clinical Lead for the Undergraduate Therapy programme, and teaches on the Postgraduate Prosthodontic and Endodontic DClinDent programmes. In addition, Louise works at Vermilion, a Private Specialist referral practice in Edinburgh, where she treats patients with Periodontal diseases on referral.

Dr Amit Patel (Thursday BSP workshop)

Specialist in Periodontics & Implant Dentist, and Associate Professor, University of Birmingham School of Dentistry, UK

Amit is the principal specialist and director at Birmingham Dental Specialists in Birmingham. His special interests are dental implants, regenerative and aesthetic Periodontics. Amit graduated from the University of Liverpool and completed a 4 year specialist training programme in Periodontics at Guy’s, King’s & St Thomas’ Dental Institute. Amit was an Associate Specialist in Periodontics at the Birmingham Dental School for 10 years and is still now an Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham School of Dentistry . He has taught at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including lecturing to dental practitioners both in the UK and internationally. Amit is the immediate past president of the Association of Dental Implantology and is now on the committee of the  European Association of Osseointegration.

Dr Alex Pollard (Thursday BSP meeting)

Consultant and Clinical Lead for Restorative Dentistry, Torbay Hospital, UK

Dr Alex Pollard has completed dual specialist training in Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry in the South West region. He is a Consultant and Clinical Lead for Restorative Dentistry at Torbay Hospital where he manages complex patients (head and neck cancer, cleft lip and palate, developmental dental anomalies, and trauma) who often require multidisciplinary care. As such, he routinely undertakes joint cases with Orthodontists and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He also works as a Consultant Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Bristol Dental School, Clinical Trials Unit, alongside Professor West and her team, as well as a visiting specialist lecturer at Peninsula Dental School. As such, he regularly lectures to undergraduate and postgraduate students, is involved in the training of new Consultants, has lectured at national conferences, and has a number of publications in peer reviewed publications.

Dr Rajeev Raghavan

Clinical Director Diabetes Endocrine Services, The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, UK

Dr Rajeev Raghavan (MD, FRCP) completed his basic medical education in Bangalore, India and then undertook further postgraduate training in Wales before completing diabetes and endocrine training in the southwest (Severn Deanery). He obtained his MD from the University of Portsmouth, working with Prof Michael Cummings at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust as part of a wider project studying the links between dysglycaemia, oxidative stress and the vascular endothelium with specific focus on the effects of aspirin. Dr Raghavan’s areas of interest currently are in Type 1 Diabetes Care, Technology in diabetes, Diabetic Retinopathy, Transitional Diabetes Care and the Psychology of diabetes. He has been promoting better care for diabetes through strengthening links between primary and secondary care, improving education for healthcare professionals regarding diabetes, translating use of novel technologies into everyday clinical care (eg CGMS) and promoting partnership working with people living with diabetes (eg remote/virtual consultations, patient education events). Dr Raghavan is part of a large and vibrant diabetes team catering to a large population of people with diabetes in Wolverhampton & surrounds. He leads a pump and Hybrid closed team with nearly 500 patients and providing inpatient diabetes care via a non-referral pathway using remote monitoring technology. The team has been successful in promoting technology use in diabetes and undertaking a huge number of remote consultations and innovative ways of working especially around the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2023, Dr Raghavan have been part of the DEKODE project, a multicentre project set up to undertake rolling quality improvement with regards to key complications of diabetes especially DKA and severe hypoglycaemia. The Diabetes team at Wolverhampton led by Dr Raghavan has promoted good diabetes self-care including supporting education programmes for HCPs and patients related to foot care, eye care, periodontal care and supported increasing awareness of diabetes amongst dental healthcare staff and the need for bi-directional referral pathways to support dental and periodontal health in diabetes patients. Dr Raghavan has contributed to improving diabetes and eye care in Nigeria via the WHO Vision 2020 links programme organised by the International Centre for Eye Health, London between the Royal Wolverhampton Trust and the University Teaching Hospitals Calabar, Nigeria.

Professor Christoph Ramseier

Associate Professor and Specialist in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, University of Bern, Switzerland

Prof. Dr. med. dent. Christoph Ramseier, MAS, is a specialist in periodontology and implant dentistry at the University of Bern, Switzerland. With an academic career spanning over two decades, he is recognised for his contributions to periodontal risk management and long-term supportive periodontal care. Prof. Ramseier received his dental degree from the University of Bern in 1995 and is board certified in periodontology by both the Swiss Society of Periodontology (SSP) and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP). Following a research fellowship at the University of Michigan, he focused on the implementation of motivational interviewing for behavioural support in patients with periodontitis and supportive periodontal care. He has published original work on risk management and supportive periodontal care and has edited the book "Health Behaviour Change in the Dental Practice". Prof. Ramseier has been a continuous contributor to EFP consensus conferences. Prof. Ramseier is committed to education and has developed software for dental education and periodontal care. He holds certificates in higher education and statistical data science. His awards include the ADEE Mature Career Educator's Award, the SSP Hans R. Mühlemann Research Prize, the EFP Digital Innovation Award (2nd prize) and the EFP Jaccard-EFP Clinical Research Prize.

Dr Giulio Rasperini

Associate Professor of Dentistry and Periodontology at the Department of Biomedical, Surgical and Dental Sciences, University of Milan, Milan, Italy

Dr Rasperini received his D.D.S. from the University of Pavia in 1990, his certificate of specialist in Orthodontics from the University of Milan in 1997, his certificate as Active Member of the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology (SIdP) in 1997. He later received his certificate as Active Member of the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED) in 2009, Full member British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry (BAAD) 2015-2022, Italian Academy of Osseointegration (IAO) in 2022, Board member of the International Academy of Periodontology (IAP) 2023-actual. 

Dr Rasperini is member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry and is ad hoc reviewer in the editorial boards of multiple journals.
He has published over 120 papers on PubMed, h-index 41 and more then 6000 citations. He lectured extensively in the five Continents in the fields of Periodontology and Implantology, Regenerative Medicine, Surgical techniques for periodontal and peri-implant tissues reconstruction.

Winner of Awards for research with his co-workers: International Quintessence Publishing Award (Boston 2000 - 2004), Goldman Prize (SIdP 1996 - 2010 - 2017), Clinical Research Award (EAO 2010), Earl Robinson Periodontal Regeneration Award (AAP 2012), Align Research Award (2013). He is the founder of the iPerio Education Center in Piacenza, Italy, where he teach his philosophy of treatment and concepts of the modern dentistry.

Professor Dr Giovanni E. Salvi

Prof. Dr. med. dent. Giovanni E. Salvi, received his license in dental medicine in 1988 from the medical faculty of the University of Bern, Switzerland. In 1990 he received his „Dr. med. dent“ degree. Between 1992 and 1994 he was a graduate student in the Department of Periodontology and Fixed Prosthodontics at the University of Bern, Switzerland. From 1994 to 1997 he was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC, USA. In 1998 he became a board-certified periodontist. He has been since 1999 a fellow of the International Team of Implantology (ITI). In 2005 he was appointed teacher of the year in the School of Dental Medicine, Bern, Switzerland. Since 2003 he is a member of the editorial board of Journal of Clinical Periodontology and Clinical Oral Implants Research. In 2006 he was appointed Associate Editor of Clinical Oral Implants Research. In 2010 he was promoted to associate professor. In 2012 he was awarded the honorary membership of the German Society of Periodontology (DGP) and in 2024 the honorary membership of the Swiss Society of Periodontology (SSP). He is currently the vice chairman and graduate program director in the department of periodontology at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

Dr Markus Schlee

Periodontist and Implantologist, Forchheim, Germany

Professor Anton Sculean

Professor and Chairman, Department of Periodontology, and Executive Director, School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland

Professor Anton Sculean is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Periodontology and currently the Head of the Dental Research Center (DRC) of the School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland. He has authored more than 510 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 40 chapters in periodontal textbooks and has delivered more than 600 lectures at national and international meetings. He is Editor in Chief of Periodontology 2000, the top ranked journal in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry.

Professor Sculean has been a recipient of many research awards, among others the Distinguished Scientist Award of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), the Anthony Rizzo Young Investigator Award of the Periodontal Research Group (PRG) of the IADR, the IADR/PRG Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine, the Distinguished Teacher Award of the European Orthodontic Society, and Honorary Membership of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). He was awarded honorary doctorates (Dr.h.c.) by the Victor Babes University Timisoara, Romania, the Semmelweis University Budapest and the Carol Davila University, Bucharest, Romania. He is currently listed as the top-rated expert in Periodontics in the world https://www.expertscape.com/ex/periodontics. His h-Index is 94 (google scholar) and 64 (web of science).

Professor Sculean's research interests focus on periodontal wound healing and regeneration, regenerative and plastic-esthetic periodontal surgery, use of antibiotics, antiseptics, and novel approaches such as lasers and photodynamic therapy in the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant infections.

Professor Dr Dagmar Else Slot

Professor Dr Dagmar Else Slot is a dental hygienist by training and at heart, deeply connected to daily clinical practice. She has a track record in clinical research and systematic reviews. Professor Andreas Stavropoulos

Professor of Periodontology, Malmö University and Region Blekinge, Sweden 

Professor Andreas Stavropoulos has been Professor of Periodontology at the Dept. of Periodontology, Faculty of Odontology, Malmö University, Sweden, since 2013, From 2020-2021 he was Professor Ordinarius at the Dept. of Periodontology and Regenerative Dentistry, University Clinics of Dental Medicine (CUMD), University of Geneva, Switzerland, and is currently also adjunct Professor at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria and the University of Bern, Switzerland. He did his postgraduate training in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at Aarhus University, Denmark (1996-1999), where he also received his PhD.(2002) and dr. Odont. degree (2011) based on preclinical and clinical studies on regenerative periodontal therapy and in association with dental implants. He was President of the European Federation of Periodontology (2022-2023) and a current member of its executive committee. He is the current Secretary and Treasurer of the Periodontal Research Group of the IADR, Deputy Treasurer of the European Young Dentist Association, and Board Member of the International Academy of Periodontology. He is an editorial board member in several esteemed dental journals, and Editor-in-chief in Clinical and Experimental Dental Research. He is a registered specialist in Periodontology in Sweden and treats patients at the Malmö University Specialty Clinic and the Specialist Clinic of the Public Dental Service in Karlskrona, Sweden, and in private practice in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Professor Martina Stefanini

Associate Professor, Department of Biomedical and Neuromotor Science, University of Bologna, and Dental Surgeon, Italy

Professor Martina Stefanini (DDS, PhD) has been Associate Professor at the Department of Biomedical and Neuromotor sciences, University of Bologna, Italy, since November 2024. From 2018 to 2024, she was a researcher there. She graduated in 2005 from the University of Bologna with a degree in dentistry and was awarded a PhD in Medical Sciences in 2016.

Professor Stefanini was a member of the Committee of the Italian Society of Periodontology from 2024-2025, member of the Editorial Committee of the Italian Society of Periodontology from 2018-2019, and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Society of Periodontology in 2016/2017. She was a visiting professor at San Raffaele University Milan from 2015-2016, a teacher at the postgraduate programme Dental School, San Raffaele University Milan in 2017, and a teacher at the II level International Masters at the University of Bologna from 2017/2018 to 2023.

She is Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry, a member of the NOGI (National Osteology Group Italy) and the ITI board team Italian Section in 2023-2025, as well as an ITI Fellow since 2018.  She is also ITI Study Club Director and member of the ITI Leadership Development Committee, and has been an active member of the Italian Society of Periodontology (SIDP) since 2012.

From 2005 to 2013, Professor Stefanini was awarded a research grant working with Professor Giovanni Zucchelli, and from 2005 to present, she has been a dental surgeon in private practice as an expert in periodontology

She is author of several publications in Pubmed, co-author of a chapter within the book Implant Therapy, edited by M. Nevins and H.L. Wang, as well as co-author of the book Esthetic mucogingival surgery around implants with Professor Zucchelli (edited by Quintessence). 

Professor Stefanini regularly speaks at national and international conferences on periodontology.


Dr Jeanie Suvan

Clinical Lecturer, Oral Sciences, University of Glasgow, UK

Dr Jeanie Suvan achieved her dental hygiene qualification at the University of Alberta, Canada. Following work in clinical practice and teaching, she moved to the Department of Periodontology, University of Bern, Switzerland, beginning her research activities. After an MSc at the University of Oxford in Evidence Based Healthcare, she completed a PhD in Clinical Dentistry, investigating obesity and periodontitis at UCL and more recently, an LLM in Medical Law and Ethics at the University of Edinburgh. For many years Jeanie was involved in patient care, post-graduate teaching and clinical research at UCL Eastman Dental Institute Unit of Periodontology where she was Associate Professor and Director of the MSc Dental Hygiene Programme. Her most recent roles include part-time Clinical University Lecturer at University of Glasgow Dental School and Honorary Clinical Lecturer, University of Siena, Italy.

Professor István Urban

Professor, University of Szeged, Hungary; and University of Michigan, USA

Dr. Urban received his DMD degree and subsequently his MD degree from Semmelweis University School of Medicine and Dentistry (Budapest, Hungary) in 1991 and 1996. He completed a full-time program in oral surgery at St. Istvan Hospital in Budapest, Hungary (1992-1996). He completed his internship program in Periodontics at UCLA. After he graduated from the Fellowship Program (1999-2000) in Implant Dentistry at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California, he was appointed assistant professor the following year. Dr. Urban is licensed in the state of California (USA) and has a private practice in Budapest, Hungary. Dr. Urban received his PhD degree in Periodontology in 2012 at the University of Szeged, Hungary. He is currently an honorary professor at the University of Szeged.Dr. Urban is a board member of the Osteology Foundation and has published scientific articles and textbook chapters on bone regeneration and soft tissue reconstructive surgery around dental implants. Dr. Urban is an adjunct clinical associate professor at the Department of Periodontology and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan. Recently, Dr. Urban has become a lecturer at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Urban is the author of the textbook titled Vertical and Horizontal Augmentation published by Quintessence, which has been published in 12 languages. Dr. Urban recently authored the second part of the book titled VERTICAL 2: The NEXT LEVEL.

Professor Giovanni Zucchelli

Professor of Periodontology and Implantology, University of Bologna, Italy

Professor Giovanni Zucchelli (DDS PhD) graduated in 1988 from the University of Bologna, Italy with a degree in dentistry, where he was then awarded a PhD in Medical Biotechnology in 1999 and was Full Professor and Dean of the Periodontal Department from 2000.

He has received many awards for clinical research in periodontology in Europe and the USA. In 2006 and 2008 he was the winner of The AAP Foundation-E Bud Tarrson Research Award in Oral Plastic Surgery. In 2020 he was awarded honorary membership of the AAP and from 2020-2022 he was President of the Italian Academy of Osteointegration (IAO). He is an active member of EAED (European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry), SIdP (Italian Society of Periodontology) and IAO (Italian Academy of Osteointegration), as well as a member of the European Federation of Periodontology and ITI fellow.

He is the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry and a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. He is also a peer reviewer in most ranked periodontal journals and the author of 150 publications in Pubmed.

Professor Zucchelli is an innovator of several soft tissue plastic surgical techniques, is a speaker at major international conferences on periodontology, and has taught theoretical and practical (with live surgery) courses in all countries. He is also co-author of two illustrated textbooks on periodontal plastic surgery (Ed. Martina), of the chapter “Mucogingival Therapy-Periodontal Plastic Surgery” in Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (Lindhe J, Lang NP, Karring T [eds], Wiley-Blackwel, and the author of the books Mucogingival Esthetic Surgery from Quintessence (published in 12 languages) and Mucogingival esthetic surgery around implants, published in 2022.

Dr Otto Zuhr

Specialist in Periodontology, Hürzeler / Zuhr Academy, Germany

Dr Otto Zuhr studied dentistry at the University of Aachen from 1986 to 1992. He is boardcertified specialist in Periodontology of the German Society of Periodontology (DGParo) and runs a private office together with Markus Hürzeler in Munich, Germany dedicated to periodontology and implant dentistry. With more than 25 years of clinical experience and teaching practice, Dr. Zuhr has become a proven expert in his field well beyond the European borders. His phd thesis was dedicated to soft tissue replacement grafts for oral soft tissue reconstruction.
